In an older Age of Middle-earth, far beneath the ancestral Halls of Durin in the mountain's base, the Dwarves worked. They mined precious mithril and bartered this metal with the Elves for their fight against Sauron.
The Dwarf Kings worked and became rich, but their mining uncovered dark secrets deep within the earth. The Balrog, a demon of the old world, was set loose, killing the Kings and driving the Dwarves from their ancestral home.
