Saruman is the head of the Order of Wizards, but has become corrupted by the temptations of Sauron, and now seeks for the entire world to come under his own personal dominion. To do so, he has resolved to weaken the minds of the Free People of Middle Earth, beginning with King Theoden of Rohan.
Grima, Saruman's henchman, acts as Theoden's counselor, slowly poisoning his mind and building the connection between his dark master and the aging king.
